Plan LABS - Sri Lanka

Plan International is one of the world’s largest international development agencies in the world, with operations in nearly 50 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas. It supports basic education programs of governments and communities in developing countries, primarily in Early Childhood Care & Development (ECCD), formal and non-formal primary education and secondary education.

In association with Plan Sri Lanka, DRF conducted a LABS program to provide livelihood training for the country’s poor youth – especially those working on tea plantations – to help them acquire the required technical and social skills in an environment of learning and mentoring.

A LABS team visited the country in 2005 and explored entry-level avenues available in various sectors by studying the local economy, natural resources, industrial profile, labor market, etc. Focus Group Discussions were held with key people in the business, government and NGO sectors to build an effective B2Y network in Hospitality, Customer Relations & Sales, Industrial Sewing Machine Operator and Gem Cutting.

Basic computer literacy, Communicative English and life skills were also included in the curriculum which was developed with the help of experts in the respective sectors.

As part of their course, the aspirants also underwent on-the-job training assignments, which not only reinforced their classroom learning but also helped them understand the workplace environment better.

A total of 227 youth – spread over two batches – were trained at Kandy under the Plan-LABS program
