YUVA : Youth Learning Centers

A lack of access to quality education within the government school system, a perception that schools do not provide skills relevant to the job market, financial circumstances, discrimination against the girl child and parental apathy are among the factors contributing to the alarmingly high dropout rate among adolescents in the urban slums of Hyderabad. Once out of school, these young people attempt to enter the world of work. However, a lack of education and suitable job skills severely limit their options. Girls often become domestic help. Some get married before they reach the legal age for marriage. Faced with deprivation and poverty, many become victims of human trafficking. The situation is not much better for young boys, who disappear into the large unorganized labor force making them targets ripe for exploitation.

DRF’s Yuva Centers are community-based adolescent youth learning centers established in various urban slums in Hyderabad to help bring long dropouts and working children back into mainstream education system. The Yuva Centers aim to include all children in the neighborhood who are forced out of mainstream education system. Through these Centers, DRF works with adolescents to wean them away from exploitative work and helps them continue their education and regain their self-esteem. The program empowers young people to take charge of their personal and professional growth so that they can gain secure and stable employment and build successful futures. In particular, girls with little or no formal education are encouraged to join the Centers.

The Yuva Centers offer academic, counseling and other job-related training programs for youth (13-18 years). They prepare the students for the Class 10 Board exam so that they can obtain formal academic certification. Recognizing that not all children will obtain formal Class 10 academic certification or pursue higher education, these Centers also provide career counseling and job-related training in fields such as Early Childhood Education and Care, Mechanical and Electrical Technology and basic computer skills, so that these young people can directly enter the workforce and pursue sustainable employment opportunities.

DRF currently serves over 500 students at five Yuva Centres across Hyderabad, located at:
      1. Borabanda (120 students): Behind Happy Style Dresses, near the bus stop.
      2. Moosapet (110 students): Community Hall in Janata Nagar
      3. Hafizpet (84 students): Community Hall near CUPS School
      4. Suraram (89 students): Sai Baba Nagar Community Hall.
      5. Alwal (93 students): UP School, Macha Bollaram, Alwal.

DRF also runs a Residential Yuva Center (80 girl students) at Venkatapur-Bhoodevinagar, Alwal. The Center is funded by the National Child Labour Project and Rajiv Udyogasri of RR District. .

We aim to expand coverage to five additional centers, covering 500 more students in the coming year.
