Education for children of migrant construction workers
SCOPE provides educational services to children of migrant construction laborers and works toward achieving systemic changes that result in sustainable improvements in the access and quality of services available to these marginalized migrant families.
YUVA: Youth Learning Centers
Community-based learning centers in various urban slums in Hyderabad that offer academic, counseling and job-related training programs for youth (13-18 years) who have been forced to drop out of school.
DRF initiated SCOPE in 1999 under the ‘Program for Enrichment of School Level Education’ (PESLE) with support from Aga Khan Foundation. The goal was to develop the school as a valuable resource for urban communities by increasing stakeholder participation and creating access to the formal education system for out-of-school adolescents. DRF partnered with government schools to strengthen education processes within the school. Upon completing the initial SCOPE program, DRF found that those children mainstreamed into government schools continued to lag behind their peers. There was not enough ongoing support in the schools. As a result, DRF has continued the SCOPE program with focus on preparing out-of-school children for the formal education system before entry. The curriculum at SCOPE’s YUVA Centers and the educational facilities for migrant children are specifically designed to ease children into the culture of the formal education system.
